Emergencies and Referrals
No matter when your pet has a medical emergency, Family Veterinary Hospital is available to help. With both doctors at the hospital possessing ten years of experience in emergency care, we have treated many different types of emergencies and are comfortable doing so. Examples of emergencies we have treated include gunshot wounds, lacerations, rattlesnake bites, injuries from automobile trauma, emergency cesarean sections, bloat, illicit drug toxicities, congestive heart failure, and more.
Aside from obvious illnesses or trauma, what constitutes an emergency? Please call us if your pet experiences any of the following situations:
• Frequent vomiting in a short time period
• Frequent bouts of diarrhea
• Difficulty breathing
• Very fast or very slow breathing
• Blood in the urine
• Obvious pain
• Trauma, such as being hit by a car or a fight with another animal – even if your pet appears to act normally
• Injury to the eyes
• Bleeding wounds
If your pet has an emergency during our regular business hours, Family Veterinary Hospital can treat your pet at our office. If possible, we ask that you call us in advance at 303-679-8387 so that we may better prepare to treat your pet immediately upon arrival.
After our normal business hours, calls are forwarded to our on-call number. If you are unable to contact us for any reason, we recommend contacting Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital at 303-424-3325.

A second emergency care facility we recommend is:
Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado (VRCC)
3550 South Jason Street
Englewood, CO 80110
During our years practicing in the Denver metropolitan area, we have developed many ties to the specialists in the region, including oncologists, surgeons, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, internists and others. We commonly call upon these doctors for expert advice when dealing with an unusual or extremely complex case. If necessary, we will request that our patients be cared for at one of these hospitals. Having a good working relationship with the specialists makes us more effective doctors for your pets.
